A garden that just wasn’t working anymore
When we arrived, the garden had a few issues that were stopping it from being used to its full potential. The lawn struggled to grow and looked patchy most of the year, the block paving patio had become discoloured over time, and a concrete slab had been put down to support a basketball hoop.
There was also a recurring drainage problem in one corner, meaning the ground would become soft and waterlogged after rain.
The aim was to create a space that:
- Could be used all year round
- Required minimal ongoing maintenance
- Worked for children, sports and everyday family life
- And still felt welcoming and well-finished
Step 1: Resetting the space
We carried out a full ground excavation, correcting levels and resolving the drainage issue so water could move through the garden naturally rather than sitting on the surface.
A new timber fence was installed around the boundary to create privacy and give the garden a clean, cohesive structure.
The play lawn: practical, clean and future-proof
For the lawn area, we installed a GrassMac base system by Vuba, which provides a stable and fully permeable foundation specifically designed for artificial grass surfaces. The structured drainage channels within GrassMac allow water and liquids to pass directly through, preventing the surface from holding moisture.
Unlike standard compacted stone installations, the artificial lawn can be lifted and rolled back for cleaning whenever required. This is particularly beneficial for homes with pets or gardens visited by foxes and other wildlife, as it helps prevent the build-up of odours over time.
GrassMac is also produced from recycled materials, making it a more sustainable choice while still providing comfort underfoot and excellent long-term durability.
We completed the surface with a high-quality Namgrass artificial lawn, chosen for its natural appearance and soft pile. The result is a clean, usable and low-maintenance play space suitable for everyday family use.
The social and entertainment space
For the patio and high-use areas, we installed a VubaMac base system and finished it with a resin bound surface in Kyoto Fall by Vuba.
This finish is:
- Fully permeable and SuDS compliant
- Smooth and comfortable underfoot
- Resistant to colour fading and staining
- Designed for long-term durability with minimal maintenance
The resin creates a clean, modern surface that complements the new lawn and timber fencing, making the area ideal for outdoor dining, relaxing or play throughout the year.
The final result
The garden now has clear purpose and flow – a lawn area designed for activity, and a patio space for socialising and everyday living. The drainage problem has been resolved, the surfaces are easy to maintain, and the entire space feels brighter, cleaner and more usable.
