A new space to honour and reflect

In early 2025, Cherry Home Improvements was commissioned by MDM Props Ltd, a leading creative fabrication company in London, to prepare the setting for The Humanitarian Memorial in Gunnersbury Park – a powerful public artwork by renowned British artist Michael Landy.

Our role was to construct a new viewing area and access path to the artist’s exact measurements, ensuring that every line and level worked harmoniously with the memorial’s sculptural form and surrounding landscape.

Precision groundwork from the ground up

The installation began with a full excavation and site build-up, carried out to tight tolerances and detailed plans provided by MDM Props and Michael Landy’s design team.

We installed a new Type 3 MOT aggregate sub-base, compacted in layers to ensure long-term strength and stability, followed by the VubaMac base system for added durability. The finished surface was completed in Runestone by Vuba — a timeless, natural tone chosen to complement the artwork and blend seamlessly with the park’s character.

The surface is fully permeable and SuDS compliant, allowing water to drain naturally through the resin-bound structure, supporting sustainability and accessibility for all visitors.

Coordinated and carefully timed

The project was completed in just four days at the end of April 2025, delivered to schedule and specification. Our team also integrated anchor points within the resin surface to accommodate the installation of the memorial later in the year – a detail requiring precise alignment and structural coordination.

Following the completion of our works, MDM Props returned in September to install the sculpture itself, which was officially unveiled on 1 October 2025.

The result

The completed viewing area and pathway form a calm, accessible and durable foundation for The Humanitarian Memorial — a space that invites reflection and remembrance, while blending respectfully into its natural setting.

We’re proud to have played a small part in bringing Michael Landy’s vision to life, working alongside MDM Props to deliver a technically exact and beautifully finished surface worthy of such an important public artwork.
